hat do Japanese metal fans think about Babymetal, 10 years on?
The first impression of them was that they were being forced to play heavy metal, even though they’d never heard it. When the first album came out, the girls’ singing was very good, so that changed how the critics viewed them. Then when the second and third records came out, the songs weren’t only a homage to authentic metal, they were more of the Babymetal world, and then traditional metalheads gradually accepted them . There are still some Babymetal fans who think Babymetal are not metal – they are Babymetal. So Babymetal are a truly successful band.”
How significant is it that they played a run of shows at the 15,000-capacity Budokan, during January-April?
