MAGNETIC EYE
Ufomammut and Darkher cast their third eye on Soundgarden
The latest in Magnetic Eye’s cover series sees metal’s underground take on Soundgarden’s mid-90s smash. Ufommamut are first up, and their initially unrecognisable Let Me Drown is glacially slow, the riff eventually emerging from ominous ambience, swathed in monstrous fuzz. Somnuri are on the nose with Mailman, with that infectiously dour riff holding sway. Valley Of The Sun’s radio rock rendition of Superunknown is toothless and Spotlights sound more like Silverchair on Black Hole Sun. Horseburner chuck all the crunch at Spoonman, and Redux closes strongly with a haunting, quietly urgent rendition of Like Suicide by alt-folk faerie Darkher. Ultimately, it’s a mixed bag: too dirge-like for rock lovers, but doom-heads will revel in experiencing another mainstream smash corrupted by underground miasma. ■■■■■■■■■■
