Chris Reifert and his crew are the death metal equivalent of the Ramones, each album unleashing more of the same. Yet while Autopsy’s 10th album closely follows last year’s Morbidity Triumphant, it rewards the band’s diehard fans with extra elements. Throatsaw’s primitivist slab and the heavy Sabbathian vibe of Well Of Entrails are no surprise, and Chris still pens some of the most disturbing lyrics around. But Ashes… is enhanced by a more bombastic vibe and a bigger production, while the bass noodling of newcomer and co-producer Greg Wilkinson adds an extra level of sickness to the deathly mire.
