Ice covers the Lake Michigan shoreline on January 30. A polar vortex socked the Midwest, driving temperatures well below zero and forcing businesses and schools to close. In Chicago, Amtrak suspended service, more than 1,600 lights were canceled and mail delivery was suspended as residents coped with record-setting low temperatures. Government officials counted at least 21 weather-related deaths.
