MEDITERRANEAN SEA

Mediterranean Sea— Migrants, most of them from Eritrea, jump from a crowded wooden boat during a rescue operation about 13 miles north of Sabratha, Libya, on August 29. The Italian navy and nongovernmental groups, including Doctors Without Borders, rescued as many as 3,000 people from about 20 small wooden boats. Migrants and refugees seeking to reach Europe have increasingly turned to the passage through lawless Libya since Turkey and Greece cracked down on the shorter eastern Mediterranean route.
