During the four-year siege, residents endured food shortages and bombardment in the town, one of the first places where opposition to President Bashar al-Assad broke into protests in 2011. Farther north, Turkish forces launched a ground offensive into Syrian territory to help capture the town of Jarablus from Islamic State (ISIS) militants, but the move was also seen as a challenge to U.S.-backed Kurdish forces in the area.
