The real and present scourge of homelessness continues to blight the Oban and Lorn area and remains an intractable problem.
According to statistics provided following a Freedom of Information request by The Oban Times, the level of the problem is surprising. Indeed, the number of people who are registered as homeless in the area has been described as ‘unacceptable’.
As Alison Watson, from the charity Shelter Scotland, said, ‘being homeless can have serious impact on young people’s life chances’. She added that ‘at the heart of the problem is that demand for truly affordable housing outstrips supply’.
