The Argyllshire Gathering 2016

Record numbers flock to games as sun burns event into the memory

THOUSANDS gathered from across the world to compete and socialise at Oban’s 145-year-old celebration of Highland culture and traditions last Thursday.

‘We’ve been blessed with a fantastic day,’ the Argyllshire Gathering’s senior steward, Robin Nicholson, told members at the start. ‘We’re hoping for a spectacular march to keep the tourists happy.’

He thanked MacQueen Bros Ltd and Argyll and Bute Council for ‘without their support we would not be able to hold the games’, and paid tribute to Duncan Currie MacIntyre, a member of the Argyllshire Gathering and St Columba’s Cathedral, who died in July.

The Duke of Argyll and Matthew Anderson take the salute as Oban High School Pipe Band parades past.

Once the march of the Stewards reached the games field at Mossfield, the competing pipers halted to remember the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme.

Angus MacColl, Benderloch, played the retreat march The Battle of the Somme by the Ballachulish Pipe Major William Lawrie, who fought in the horrendous battle with the 8th Battalion of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.

Oban’s Emma Thompson took first, Sian Henderson, Isle of Mull, was second, with Julie Didcock, Oban, taking third.
