As we report today, there is a genuine issue of concern building over the provision of ambulance services in the north-west, including the Skye and Fort William areas.
The trade union Unite is up in arms over emergency ambulances from the West Highlands being used routinely for long-distance patient transfer journeys to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness.
Furthermore, the Unite regional officer, Richard Whyte, says members of his union working for the Scottish Ambulance Service are sometimes called out while they are sleeping after 12-hour shifts. Mr Whyte says, unsurprisingly, that this kind of working practice is causing fatigue and low morale.
