Developing the Young Workforce West Highland is part of a wider Scottish Government youth employment strategy, aimed at reducing youth unemployment by 40 per cent by 2021. To make this happen we need to ensure young people in Scotland, and in our West Highland and Lochaber region, have the skills and confidence needed to make the seamless transition between school and the workforce.
Within our long-term plan for bridging the gap between education and employment, we are actively looking to create school/employer partnerships to help enhance learning and teaching across the curriculum and help better prepare young people for the world of work. Building employer partnerships with schools can provide businesses with a range of social and corporate benefits, provide young people with a much better understanding of the local labour market, reduce skills shortages and effectively help you as an employer to recruit and retain the right local talent.
A partnership with a school is likely to include support with presentations on what your company can offer, the variety of career roles within the company, work experience placements, site visits, mock interviews, mentoring, and communicating to teachers the skills and requirements for careers within your workforce.
