Contempt for votes against hate crimes

Sir,

I feel utter contempt for the 16 councillors who defeated the motion that Argyll and Bute Council should condemn hate crimes (‘Vote to fight hate crimes defeated’, The Oban Times, August 25).

These councillors hold the view that hate crime would only gain attention and popularity by being officially condemned. If they listened to some of their disabled, LGBTI, settler or non-Christian constituents, a more unsettling reality would become apparent.

Currently these ostriches prefer the position of the three wise monkeys. Meanwhile, discrimination, bullying and harassment face so many groups in our community and, by sweeping the issue under a rug of smug complacency, these councillors abandon those who need their support.
