I wild swim a lot and went for a lovely swim with my mother at Farleigh Hungerford Swimming Club in late summer. The River Frome is particularly cold (much colder than the Avon, our other local river). Mum swam with me in 15 degrees. I was so proud of her for managing the temperature without any acclimatisation swims. Already too cold for most fair weather swimmers we had the river to ourselves. It was a really lovely moment, which she has caught in this poem (and I do laugh when I get into cold water). Her mum swam daily every morning, throughout her life, so we really associate water and swimming with Granny Mary (she was also a writer working under the name Mary Dawson).
