Simon Griffiths discovers a swimmers’ paradise in the former East Germany

A number of people have swum the length of every swimmable lake in the UK’s Lake District. If you wanted to do the same thing in the Mecklenburg Lake District (Mecklenburgische Seenplatt e) in Germany it would take you a lot longer. It’s not called the land of a thousand lakes for nothing.

The Mecklenburgische Seenplatt e lies to the north of Berlin and was thus, until 1990, behind the Iron Curtain. Historically, it was a relatively poor, sparsely populated region but the beauty of its lakes, waterways and historic towns has allowed it to develop a significant tourist industry over the past 25 years. With many of the lakes connected by canals it’s possible to travel long distances by boat – in fact, hiring a boat is an ideal way to see much of the area.

About Outdoor Swimmer

In our fifth anniversary issue we take a look back at the first five years of H2Open magazine as well as looking to the future and asking ,where will swimming take you in 2016? Whatever your level of swimming, there is a challenge out there for you! If that challenge is a winter swimming competition, we have plenty of top tips and expert advice on swimming in icy water. But if the cold doesn’t really do it for you, we have destination reports from sunny Bermuda and the German lakes. In this issue we also profile four young BLDSA swimmers as well as catching up with open water swimming champions Keri-anne Payne and Cassie Patten. Plus all the usual training, technique and nutrition advice and gear reviews. Happy swimming!
