Continuing our Southern Hemisphere focus, the remnants of an ancient penguin that stood as tall as a human have been found encased in rock on a beach on Hampden Beach, Ontago, on New Zealand’s South Island.
Measurements of the partial skeleton are: weight 100kg and body length 1.77 metres.
Penguins evolved from birds tens of millions of years ago and when they lost the ability to get airborne, they became accomplished swimmers at which time they also grew much larger.
