Water flows into Ambleside as if it were the hub of a spoked wheel. Aside from the tiny rills, that are everywhere if you look, there are five becks flowing into our village from the combes and vales that surround us. The place even defines itself by your position relative to Stock Ghyll that cleaves the village in two; you are either Above Stock or Below Stock. There is so much flowing water here that a friend of ours even has a beck running under a manhole cover in her cellar.
