When I was invited on the first ever school swimming trip, little did I know it was to be more than swimming training. As Mrs Cheshire said from the outset, ‘This is a journey, not a race’ and what a journey it was! Eleven students accompanied by Mrs Cheshire, Miss Korcz and Mr Pollock embarked on an adventure of a lifetime.
Against the breath-taking backdrop of Montenegro, we swam at least 5k a day in a variety of open water: fjords, the beautiful Lake Skadar, the tranquil Maraca river, the Adriatic Sea, hidden coves and the famous cave of Plava Spilja. Indeed, we swam – but we also explored the Bay of Kotor while island hopping and visiting historic towns dotted along the shoreline. Most importantly, I discovered a lot about myself; this was a challenge that took me outside of my comfort zone and involved much risk-taking, but with perseverance, determination and resilience I had the most amazing week and have a newfound confidence, have made lasting friendships and have the most unforgettable memories.
