Emerging markets mean different things to different people – but taking risk often means rich rewards

Emerging markets conjure up different images to different people. Some picture risk and no rule of law – the ‘wild west’ – while others see opportunity, excitement, and growth.

As with any other markets, we are again dealing with the age-old fear and greed psychology. In fairness to the proponents of the wild west viewpoint, doing some background reading for this article produced a definition of them that included the phrase “the existence of some form of market exchange and regulatory body”.

For those of us used to the London Stock Exchange and the Financial Conduct Authority, this does not sound quite so robust.

Then we have fashion: over and above the risk on/off episodes we have seen over the past few years, there have been clear swings in sentiment towards emerging markets.

A clear example of this was seen in the second half of 2015, when emerging markets slid sharply. The correction was the result of a plethora of factors, including ultra-loose monetary policy, falling commodity prices and slowing Chinese growth.
