Practical Poultry  |  No.137 Welsummer
Keeping chickens in the back garden is good
for the soul; it’s official! This month’s Me and
my birds story, which starts on page 34, reaffi
rms perfectly the positive influence that a
handful of hens can bring to their keeper.
This is an aspect that the experienced
owners among you will be completely familiar
with but, for those of you who are newer to the
hobby, such positives may be less obvious.
Katie Higginson’s story provides a great
illustration of just what a powerful and
therapeutic influence looking after a few
chickens can be. She acquired her first
bantams while suffering from a debilitating
bout of depression. Her hopes were that the
birds would provide her with a worthwhile
focus as well as a gentle, outdoor routine to
adhere to.
