COACHING SESSION

1 Doing the emotional groundwork

Denise* has spent more than 35 years working as a senior PA to a series of successful CEOs. She told me that, while she knew high achievers could be demanding, she had never in her working life experienced anyone like her current boss.

Denise’s discomfort was visible – she was fidgeting and kept looking over her shoulder, as if she felt she was being watched or overheard. Her boss had been extremely charming when she first started working for him. Denise said, ‘He can really fool you into thinking he is lovely. He can be so charismatic if he likes you but you are either “in” or “out”. If you are “in”, he beams all his charm on you and you feel really honoured. If you are “out”, he is cruel, puts you down and makes fun of you. He is a bully and I can see that everyone around him knows it, but we are all scared. The “in” crowd fawn around him and fear putting a foot wrong. The rest of us don’t dare stand up to him because that is the biggest mistake anyone can make. He flies into a rage if he is ever challenged. He’s the boss and he has total control. He is not accountable to anyone and he tramples over everyone to get what he wants.’
