”There’s so much we can achieve if we have the will to do it”

Actor, producer and DJ Idris Elba talks about his passion for music, what it was like directing for the first time, and the joy of starring alongside Jessica Chastain in factual drama Molly’s Game

Idris Elba

Meeting Idris Elba is like stepping into a magnetic field. The man radiates so much energy and intensity that you can’t escape it. Not that you would want to, because Elba is one of the most delightfully charming and engaging men to walk the planet. There’s also a curiously shy and gentle side to him in person, qualities distinctly at odds with his penchant for racing cars, skydiving and fighting as a professional kick-boxer.

Aside from his many pursuits, Elba is rapidly becoming one of Hollywood’s most popular stars. Not only did he appear in four films last year, but he’s reprising his role as the troubled London detective for a fifth season of Luther, to be released later this year. Having recently starred in Stephen King’s The Dark Tower with Matthew McConaughey – critics said Elba was the best thing about that movie – and The Mountain Between Us, opposite Kate Winslet, he has also appeared flexing his superhero form as Heimdall in Thor: Ragnarok.
