THE frames and tanks of Isle of Man Railway Beyer, Peacock 2-4-0T No. 9 Douglas were relocated to Port Erin carriage shed in mid-August.
The move followed No. 9 being sandblasted and receiving a coat of red oxide, after it was decontaminated of asbestos. The work included lifting the boiler, which remains stored at Douglas.
For the last decade, No. 9 Douglas (and No. 5 Mona) had been stored in a polythene asbestos containment'tent' in the main carriage shed at Douglas, having been long out of service.
The presence of asbestos in the locos was one of the factors which led to Nos. 5 and 9 being transferred into loM government ownership in 2011.
They had previously been part of the collection owned by the Isle of Man Railway & Tramway Preservation Society.
