IN a surprise move, the Welsh Government confirmed plans to bring the Wales & Borders rail operations under public control with ridership at just 5% of normal levels.
Minister for Economy, Transport and North Wales Ken Skates said the move would help secure the future of services, protect jobs and support the upgrades of routes around Cardiff.
Services will be operated by the Welsh ‘operator of last resort’, which changed its name to Transport for Wales Ltd six days before the announcement.
The new operator will be a subsidiary of the country’s devolved infrastructure manager, which is also called Transport for Wales.
