THE last remaining former Stockport Corporation tram, Dick, Kerr open-top double decker No. 5, was relaunched back into service at the Heaton Park Tramway (HPT) on December 4 following a sevenyear overhaul.
The 1901-built four-wheeler had been withdrawn from service in 2014 after a small leak was discovered in the upper deck floor/lower saloon ceiling. It had only entered Heaton
Park traffic during the previous year, but further inspection revealed that the leak was more severe than originally thought, resulting in rotten roof timbers and considerable water damage.
During the subsequent repair work by Manchester Transport Museum Society (MTMS) volunteers it was found that one of the staircases was also water damaged, which would require complete renewal.
