A PROPOSAL by Highways England to demolish more than 100 structures on disused railways which could potentially hamper future railway reopenings has been condemned.
When the British Railways Board was wound up in 2013, responsibility for nonoperational railway land was transferred to the Highways Agency, part of DfT.
Now renamed Highways England (HE), the plan is to demolish 134 structures to reduce or eliminate the risks they present. In addition, some cuttings are being infilled.
One campaigner likened the action as“finishing off what Beeching started”.
