NETWORK Rail reopened the Stonehaven-Montrose line on February 22 after it was closed on January 15 following the collapse of part of a parapet (RM Jan, p7).
Work to repair and strengthen the Victorian structure, situated in a remote location, has taken place around the clock. It has included reconstruction of the failed parapet wall, the installation of additional concrete supports on the bridge deck to help retain and support the track, and installing ties through the bridge to strengthen the overall structure.
The bridge was last inspected in October 2020 but had received a detailed examination in March 2018. Following the incident, inspections were carried out on similar bridges on Scotland’s network.
