THE major overhaul of GWR ‘2884’ 2-8-0 No. 3850 at the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway (GWSR) has taken a significant step forward with the alignment of the new front end to the mainframes.
“We’ve built a complete new front end in the workshops at Toddington,”explained Mike Solloway, vice-chairman of Dinmore Manor Locomotive Ltd (DMLL), which owns the engine.
“We’ve had two new cylinders cast and machined, with valve liners fitted, two new extension frames, a new racking plate and two new supporting angles. The only original parts in this assembly are the pony truck suspension beam pivot casting underneath.”
On May 10, No. 3850’s new front end was turned over and through 180° at Toddington ready to go into the frames.
