From the mid-1980s, the HSTs were painted in InterCity livery, and power car No. 43049 heads south past Knighton Junction signalbox on June 25, 1986, just before the semaphore signalling in the ‘Leicester Gap’ was decommissioned. The line to the left serves Coalville.

What were you doing on October 4, 1982? To jog your memory, Helmut Kohl was confirmed as West Germany’s new chancellor, the newspapers were getting excited over the launch of Sony’s compact disc (CD) player, Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister and topping the pop charts was reggae band Musical Youth with Pass The Dutchie –a song probably best forgotten!
It was also an historic day on the Midland Main Line (MML) as the sleek blue and yellow InterCity 125 trains entered service between Sheffield and London St Pancras, starting a process that would displace the Class 45 ‘Peaks’ which had been hauling trains since steam ended on the MML in the mid-1960s.
