THE 1 0¼in gauge Wells Harbour Railway (WHR) at Wells-next-the Sea, Norfolk, is to be sold as soon as buyers can be found for the stock and equipment. The line will continue to run until then.
The 1200-yard-long WHR was opened in 1976 by the late Lt Cdr Roy Francis, and runs alongside Beach Road to Pinewoods Holiday Park near the beach.
It has been operated by Gary and Alison Brecknell since 2003, who now plan to retire. Their lease of the land on which the railway runs expires in 2022, and they wanted to renew this for another 10 years so the railway could be sold as a going concern.
However, the Holkham Estate has stated it wishes to "find better solutions for getting people to and from the beach - ones that offer an easier and safer experience."
