GOVIA Thameslink Railway has launched a scheme to increase Brighton station’s recycling rates from 30% to 95% using a new Mobile Segregation Unit (MSU).
Currently 12% of the total waste collected across GTR’s 800-mile network is said to come from Brighton, which – prior to the pandemic – equated to 650 tonnes of rubbish a year.
The MSU will segregate, wash, compact, bale, weigh and electronically tag all waste from Brighton station, as well as all Southern and Thameslink trains running to and from the city.
Since it was installed in August, the unit has already prevented more than 32 tonnes of waste going to incineration.
