THE Norfolk-based charity The Melton Constable Trust has purchased a key section of the railway trackbed that formerly ran into and beyond Holt. The trust views the purchase as a step forward in its aspirations to take the North Norfolk Railway back into the town.
Holt’s original station, which remained open until 1964, was on what is now the A148 road to Sheringham. Attempts in 1965 by the North Norfolk Railway to buy the trackbed were rejected by the county council and, as the railway was rebuilt west from Weybourne, it had to contend with a station at Kelling, around a mile from Holt town centre.
