THE Auckland One Rail consortium which includes Australian firm UGL Rail, has won an eight year contract to operate commuter services around Auckland, replacing the existing operator Aka Tangata, a consortium including Transdev and CAF.
The Auckland network is to be expanded with the new 3.5km City Rail Link tunnel due to open in 2024 and approval has recently been granted for electrification of the 19km Papakura –Pukekohe section of the Southern Line, south of the city.
This work, together with construction of three new stations, and an additional track for freight, should also be complete by 2024.
