HITACHI Rail is working on battery-hybrid trials involving Class 802 bimode units.
The company and rolling stock leasing firm Eversholt Rail is in the advanced stages of design and engineering for a tri-mode version of the train for Great Western Railway, which will operate on battery power, as well as in overhead electric and diesel modes.
A battery is being built to replace one of the engines on a GWR five-car Class 802, allowing the trains to work on the partially-electrified route between Paddington and Penzance. It will allow the train to operate in battery-only mode on unelectrified sections, as well as supplementing the power of its diesel engines, if required, to maintain performance.
