■ WITH reference to Steam Portfolio in the January issue, there is a picture of the Mid-Hants railway. It states the photo is pictured at Bowers GREEN Lane, but it should be Bowers GROVE Lane at Ropley.
Publication of a letter does not imply that the editor or staff of The Railway Magazine necessarily agree with its contents.
For a better Bradford
THE presence of the conductor rails shows the photo on page 23 was taken after the Edwardian period quoted in the caption, as the LSWR started electrification later than this and the first line opened in 1915. In fact, the same shot appears in DL Bradley’s book on LSWR locomotives and the date is given as mid-1918; the photographer was FE Mackay.

I VERY much agree with Graeme Pickering that Bradford has the worst rail connections in Britain relative to its size (January issue). On the other hand, the HS3 type proposal, with a completely new line from Leeds to Manchester via Bradford, nearly all in tunnel, never seemed a realistic proposition to me – particularly if the Leeds to Manchester route via Huddersfield is to be substantially improved.

I WAS interested to read the account of the ‘Duchess’ and ‘Castle’ climbing the Lickey Incline in January’s RM. Today the appearance of locos away from their traditional routes are of course commonplace. In contrast, the appearance of either class climbing the incline in BR steam days would have been regarded as noteworthy.
I WAS very sad to learn of the death of Jeremy English (January issue).

■ PANORAMA (January issue) refers to Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 as a cruise ship. This is not quite correct, she is an ocean liner – in fact, the only one in the world.
