MORE than 12,000 people passed through the gates of Iarnród Éireann’s Inchicore Works in Dublin on May 7, to mark its 175th anniversary.
On display was a range of rolling stock, including Northern Ireland Railway’s CAF railcar No. 3005, GM 111 Class No. 8112 Northern Counties, the Railway Preservation Society of Ireland VS Class 4-4-0 No. 85 Merlin and 141 Class diesel No. B141. IE’s 071 Class No. 071, carrying the original CIE livery, was named Great Southern & Western Railway by the company’s chief executive officer Jim Meade.
The highlight of the celebration was the unveiling of the RPSI-owned 121 Class No. B134, restored to its as-built and as-delivered 1961 condition in original grey and yellow livery, by American Ambassador Claire Cronin. Ambassador Cronin also named the loco Inchicore Railway Works, marking the long connection between the works and the USA.
