FOUR former Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) Class 1014 electric locomotives have been bought by Turkish construction company Yapı
Merkezi, for use in Tanzania for testing the new 25kV AC electrified 202km long Dar es Salaam-Morogoro standard gauge line which was completed in late 2021. Test running began in April.
The dual voltage 15kV/25kV AC locos were built in 1993/94 and initially used for express services from Vienna to Budapest. Withdrawn in 2016, they were sold to a Romanian company at scrap value and moved en masse to Romania, but several were reinstated for use in Austria by open access company Zeller Transporttechnik (ZTT) in 2018.
After ZTT ceased trading, four of the six ex-ZTT locos were sold for use in Tanzania.
