THE second phase of the Tyne & Wear Metro’s new £70 million South Gosforth depot has been completed, and three new sections of line to serve it have been installed. The project is being completed in six stages, allowing the site to continue to function during the work.
During the next part of the work, more of the old building, which was originally opened by the London & North Eastern Railway to maintain third-rail suburban electric units in 1923, will be demolished and a further three new lines will be put in place.
In order to be ready for the arrival of the first of the system’s 46 new Stadler-built trains, the new depot is due for completion by October.
