THE annual report for 2021 records that Irish Rail enjoyed a surplus of €2.6 million as Iarnród Éireann (IÉ) provided 17.4 million passenger journeys in 2021 – down from 17.9 million in 2020 that includes 2.5 months of no Covid-19 restrictions.
Covid-19 continued to impact operating revenue compared to pre-pandemic levels. Total revenue of €144.5m (2020: €143.7m) from operations in the year shows a recovery of €0.8m. Rail Freight revenue at €3.6m (2020: €3.8m) reduced marginally year on year.
