DART + WEST APPLICATION TO BE SUBMITTED: Iarnród Éireann No. 29027 departs Clonsilla on June 10 with the 17.10 Maynooth-Connolly. It is one of six Class 2900s still in original livery. Clonsilla is the junction for M3 Parkway and as part of the DART + programme the level crossing will be abolished and the line electrified. The planning application for a railway order is expected to be submitted later this summer.
KIERAN MARSHALL
A WORKER with over 19 years’ experience in Iarnród Éireann’s Chief Civil Engineer’s Department, acting as track safety co-ordinator for a team working close to the Dublin-Belfast line near Gormanston, narrowly escaped death on July 21, 2021 after jumping clear of a railway track just four seconds before the Dublin-Belfast Enterprise Service passed at over 140kph.
A report released by the Railway Accident Investigation Unit (RAIU) on July 8, recorded details of the “near miss” and made it clear that under other circumstances, there could have been a fatality or injury.
The investigation said a lack of concentration by the employee and not ensuring he adhered to the requirements of the company’s rule book were a major factor in the incident.
