Scotsman stamp set
GRESLEY Pacific No. 60103 Flying Scotsman began its centenary year celebrations on February 24, with an event at Waverley station in Edinburgh. The date marked exactly 100 years since the world-famous locomotive left Doncaster Works to officially enter service with the LNER as No. 1472.
ROYAL Mail has issued a set of 12 Flying Scotsman stamps to mark the loco’s centenary year, and these are also the final set of stamps to include the silhouette of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
Back then, the loco was just another in the new ‘A1’ (later ‘A3’) fleet, but it acquired fame when chosen to be displayed at the British Empire Exhibition at Wembley in 1924/25, for which it was named after the LNER’s prestigious ‘Flying Scotsman’ service that connected London and Edinburgh.
