North West electrification progress WORK on a £78m project to electrify 6½ miles of line between Wigan North Western and Lostock will require a six-day closure of the route between May 6-12. Bridge raising or replacement work has been ongoing on 17 structures, meaning local diversions.
Preparations for new Morley station NINE days of work at the beginning of February have laid the foundations for new, longer platforms along with a track realignment at Morley station on the TransPennine Manchester-Leeds route. The next key piece of work at Morley station in June will see the old station demolished, and a new one set to open later this year.
St Erth to go step free A NEW footbridge and lifts are to be installed at St Erth as part of the Government’s Access for All programme. The new facility will make the Grade II listed station fully accessible for the first time since it was built in 1852. The current footbridge will be removed, and has been donated to the East Somerset Railway, where it will be installed at Cranmore station. Work will begin in the spring and should be completed before Christmas.
East Suffolk embankment work NETWORK Rail has begun to stabilise and widen a mile-long embankment on the Ipswich- Lowestoft line to the north of Martlesham, where signalling equipment and signage is falling down the bank. Engineers will be working over 13 consecutive days ending on April 6.
