LAST LOOK AT NENE VALLEY’S GERMAN TANK: Deutsches Reichsbahn Class 64 2-6-2T No. 64.305 began its journey ‘home’to Germany on March 18 following its sale by the Nene Valley Railway (NVR) to road/ rail company Integro Verkehr GmbH. Withdrawn in 1972, it was bought by a group of Severn Valley Railway members, arriving at Bridgnorth in 1974, but it proved to be too large.
Purchased by NVR supporter Richard Hurlock, it arrived at Wansford in 1977, before being sold to the NVR in 1985. Taken out of traffic in 1987, it has since been stored awaiting its turn in the overhaul queue. In 1988, the loco’s air pump was loaned to Flying Scotsman Services to enable No. 4472 to haul air braked stock in Australia in 1989-90.
The new owners of the former Deutsche Bundesbahn (German Federal Railway) loco intend to return it to action. No. 64.305 is pictured at Wansford on March 8.
