TWO young Peterborough railway enthusiasts, Oliver Walker and Harry Cowley, both aged 12, have come to the aid of the Nene Valley Railway (NVR) following an arson attack on the line’s Orton Mere signalbox.
Police have linked the blaze to a number of malicious fires in the Orton area of the city, overnight on March 12, which included cars and sheltered accommodation. Left devastated by the attack on the ’box, which has rendered the structure out of use – although train services can still operate – the two friends who enjoy watching trains on the NVR now want to save the ’box. The boys, who each started web fundraising pages, had raised in excess of £10,000 by March 20. They plan to walk along the length of the track to raise cash.
Repairs are estimated to cost in the region of £20,000. Visit nvr.org.uk/ for details of how to donate.
