Rovos Rail Class 5E1 locos E1105 and E1115 seen at Meyerton south of Johannesburg on June 5 with a train that had started in Walvis Bay, Namibia 12 days before. The first 135 Class 5E1 locos were built in the UK by Metropolitan-Vickers between 1959 and 1961; the remaining 555 locos were built under licence by UCW in South Africa. The Rovos Class 5E1, Series 5, UCW built, locos all date from 1967-1969.

SOUTH African luxury tour train operator Rovos Rail has expanded its fleet of 1,067mm gauge locos recently, buying four Class 38 electro-diesel locos (Nos. 38 012/013/017 and 040) which had been used by national rail operator Transnet.
