NETWORK Rail has appointed AmcoGiffen as the main contractor for the rebuild of the fire-damaged Troon station.
The station’s platform one building was badly damaged in a blaze in July 2021, and in the intervening months, Network Rail has worked with partners, stakeholders and the local community to develop the design for the new building. The Railway Heritage Trust agreed to contribute £500,000 towards the cost back in July 2021.
It will cost around £5m to reconstruct the building in a way that is sympathetic to the historic character of the station and in keeping with the remaining building on platform two. The chosen design will be to modern standards and provide a spacious waiting area and ticket office. It will also include a ‘changing places’ facility which will deliver an improved amenity for people with disabilities and their carers. The target is to reopen the station in time for the 2024 Open Golf tournament which is being held at Troon.
Only the steel work of the former station remains, but the rebuilt station will look very much like the original. The disused chimneys have been dispensed with.
