TICKET office closure plans were scrapped at the end of October, after Transport Secretary Mark Harper said they failed to meet high passenger standards.
Train operating companies controlled either directly or under contract by the Department for Transport published proposals in July to close almost1000 ticket offices across the country in a cost saving measure.
Avery short period of consultation with passengers and others began on July 5 and was originally due to end just three weeks later on July 26, subsequently extended to September 1 as there was also a lack of information about alternative ticketing arrangements.
When the consultation closed, 750,000 comments had been received by Transport Focus and London Travel Watch, the majority arguing against the proposals.
Under procedures established at the time of Privatisation in the mid-1990s, the train operators had to comply with the Ticketing and Settlement Agreement. This specifies that any action must not dilute the service to passengers and must ensure impartial retailing on behalf of other operators.
