FOLLOWING the unveiling of the Ffestiniog Railway’s newly built Double-Fairlie James Spooner during its October 6-8 Bygones Weekend (see Headline News last issue), the locomotive was ceremonially launched on October 20.
James Spooner was fully painted in lined ‘ Victorian Plum’ livery for its Bygones Weekend cameo appearance, but did not carry nameplates – although the name did appear on the distinctive bells atop the boiler.
As invited guests and press arrived at a rainswept Harbour station on the morning of October 20, James Spooner stood at the head of a train with its nameplates fitted but obscured. On the adjacent road was England 0-4-0STT Welsh Pony, which carries the same ornate livery as the new Double-Fairlie. Welsh Pony is currently out of service awaiting work on a crank pin, but had been carefully drawn across the Cob for the occasion.
