WHEN SR Bulleid Pacific No. 34053 Sir Keith Park returns after its overhaul next summer it will bear the name 303 Squadron, the Battle of Britain squadron formed mostly of Polish pilots.
The loco’s owning group, Southern Locomotives Ltd (SLL), says the move is in tribute to the valour and dedication of the squadron that was generally regarded as the most successful in combat during the battle.
A naming event is planned to be held at Eridge on the SpaValley Railway, and the 4-6-2 will carry the name for approximately one year. SLL is in touch with Polish groups of interest in this, and to the family of Sqn Ldr Ronald Kellett, who commanded the squadron at the time.
