REPAIRS to the Grade II listed station buildings at Gobowen are able to proceed, following aCommunity Ownership Fund grant of £246,146 from Department for Levelling Up, Housing &Communities.
Completed in 1848 by the Shrewsbury and Chester Railway, the main building is notable for its Florentine style. Owned by the Oswestry Station Building Trust, it provides small business accommodation.
The grant will be used to repair the building, with the cement render removed and replaced with lime render. Roofs and gutters will be repaired, and doors and windows repainted.
Meanwhile, the brick booking office and waiting room on the Up side, which is used by the independent travel agent and ticket seller, Severn-Dee Travel, as well as a cafe run by Derwen College, will have its roof and gutters repaired, and doors, windows, and signage repainted.
When this renovation work is completed, landscaped areas and planting beds will be formed to improve the surroundings of the buildings, and swift nest boxes will be introduced to the tower of the main building.
