AN item caught my eye on page 14 of the December 2023 edition, advertising a Rail Staff Christmas Carol Service at St Mary’s Church on Eversholt Street, beside Euston station.
Eversholt Street was formerly named Seymour Street and when the church was consecrated in 1826, it was on the edge of the notorious slums of Somers Town. St Mary’s was (and remains) a church of the Anglo-Catholic tradition and became closely associated with work in the slums and promoting housing reform.
As part of this, a curate there from in the 1920s, named Father Desmond Morse-Boycott, started a choir for boys from the slums, and from this grew into what became the independent St Mary of the Angels Song School, which lasted until 1972.
