THE mayors of theWest Midlands and Greater Manchester have joined forces to explore how rail connectivity and capacity can be improved between the Midlands and the North.
The move, confirmed by theWest Midlands Combined Authority, comes after the announcement in October by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak that he was cancelling HS2 phases 2A to Crewe and 2B from Crewe to Manchester.
At the time the Prime Minister pledged to work withWest Midlands mayor Andy Street to enhance connectivity between Birmingham and Manchester, following the decision to scrap HS2 north of Handsacre.
Private sector work will be led by engineering firm Arup with input from other leading firms and will focus on the section to Manchester Airport.
The work will re-examine the cost, capacity, and economic uplift of changes to the rail route, helping to identify packages of potential interventions and private sector funding models and solutions.
